3-way switch options

I have a single LED load with 2 wall switches. My goal is 3-fold:

  1. Be able to control the load via z-wave, when the z-wave system is up
  2. Be able to control the load from either switch manually, when the z-wave system is down (essential for WAF)
  3. Hit the top of either paddle to turn the load on, and the bottom to turn it off.

I currently satisfy all 3 criteria using a GE 12722 3-way switch + GE 12723 add-on switch. I hate my GE switches, and want to replace with Zooz.

As I understand it, my 3 Zooz options are:
A. Use a Zen76 and a mechanical switch – gives me 1 & 2, but not 3
B. Use 2 @ Xen71 – gives 1 & 3, but not 2
C. Use Zen71 + ZAC99 – latter unavailable.

Perhaps I’m misunderstanding something? Is there a Zooz option to satisfy these 3 criteria?

If not, would a Zen76 and a GE 12723 add-on switch work? I’m wondering if it might work like the ZAC99.

Thanks!

Hi @xooxonicus , thanks for reaching out!

I would recommend 2 x ZEN71 in a virtual 3-way. You can control the load via Z-Wave with the system up, and if you program the two switches together via the direct association option, they will still control the load from both switches when the hub is down, since DA is direct device to device communication. It would also satisfy criteria 3 as well. I’ve linked our article regarding virtual installations below:

Ooh, didn’t realize DA worked without hub – nice!

Yep! You need to set the association via the hub, and then it will work going forward without the hub being online.
