I have many ZEN30s throughout my home. The extra relay button has been very helpful in exposing more interesting smart home features to all my rooms. On most of my ZEN30 installations, I do not have anything physically wired to the relay. Instead I have local control disabled for the relay and use it for sending Scene events back to Home Assistant, to trigger automations.
I like to use the LED for the relay to give information back about the status of those automations. There are two ways I’ve found I can control the LED.
- Set parameter 20 to ‘0’. Set parameter 2 to ‘0’ or ‘1’. Use z-wave control from the automation to turn the relay on/off. This results in the LED turning on and off very quickly, but also results in a loud click noise from the internal relay changing state. I also don’t like the idea of the out wire being hot, even if it’s insulated well in the box.
- Set parameter 20 to ‘2’. Then set parameter 2 to ‘2’ or ‘3’ from the automation to control the LED. This results in the LED turning on and off without any sounds, but all the LEDs on the switch (including the dimmer LEDs) blink green several times for the first few seconds before settling into the correct states.
I prefer option 2. What I love about my ZEN32 Scene Controller is how it supports disabling the green LED blinking on it when parameters are changed via parameter 23. If it were possible to copy this functionality onto the ZEN30, the aesthetics of my setup would greatly improve!
Overall I’m very happy with my choices for using these switches and I’ve been able to do everything I’ve wanted with them from an automation stand point. Having this functionally supported on the ZEN30 would just be icing on the cake and would make everything feel more professional and complete.
Is there any possibility of the ZEN30 getting this functionality added in a future firmware update?
