Another wish list item: A Ceiling Fan Canopy module!
Since Inovelli stopped making the Z-Wave canopy there really is a gap in the market for Zooz to create one. I’ve personally resisted the urge to buy the Zigbee flavor from them, and for now are using a ZEN52 for fan control. The issue with that solution is I don’t have dimming on the light, and can’t control fan speed (other than with a pull string.). [I thought about using two ZEN52’s to get speed control but I can’t physically fit all that in the fan housing]
Unfortunately three of the 4 fans in my house are hardwired hot all the time with no switch at all, and the 4th fan has only 1 load wire, so the whole fan / light combo turns off at once from the switch. A Z-Wave based canopy module that could control the light and the three speeds of the fan (from, say a ZEN30 or ZEN32/35) would be awesome. I’d order 4 of them today if it existed.
Happy Sunday everyone. Well, one of my hardwired fans with the dreaded proprietary RF module in the canopy decided to freak out. SO, I think I’m forced to go with the Zigbee option. Its been required by the family that it have full dimming and speed control so my ZEN52 solution won’t pass acceptance testing.
It pains me so…
But if Zooz released a z-wave version tomorrow I’d buy it immediately and put the zigbee on eBay. Just sayin’
By any chance is your fan wired with 14-3 to the canopy, i.e., two circuits? When our house was built, I had the electrician do that on the bedroom fans, consequently I’ve sine re-wired to have the light on one switch/dimmer and the fan on the other. There aren’t a lot of fan speed controls out there in Z-Wave, but there may be a few left. I’ve used four of the (older) Jasco/GE controllers in a previous home. A quick look on Amazon shows Leviton and Enbrighten still having fan controllers–not to mention WiFi solutions. Just a thought…
I wish. Unfortunately not. This particular fan was originally a light when the house was built. The previous owners at least put in a fan rated box, but the wire is 14/2 with a simple switch. The fan has had an rf based module where the light switch is actually an rf remote just powered by 120v. It gets interference (even though I’ve changed the dip switches twice) where it turns on by itself. Today twice in an hour it kept turning on / going to max speed and I’m done with it. Fan itself is fine.
My three other fans are worse. They were previous homeowner installs all on the same circuit with no switch whatsoever. They are each in a bedroom where the primary switch controls an outlet. I’ve already replaced those switches with zen32’s with the outlet hardwired to be hot always. For those rooms I’m using the ZEN52 solution - simple on/off for light and fan, with the pull string set to medium fan speed always- controlled by the zen32.
But my inovelli is ordered and on the way. It will be my first “in production” zigbee device that isn’t a bulb or a plug (I don’t even use my zigbee plugs at all - they are just there to fortify the zigbee mesh. ) […well at least since my early SmartThings days where I had a good mix of zigbee and zwave, before I moved to all zwave wherever possible. ]

The Bond Bridge is something I’ve been using, mainly for window shades in our home, but it can also control our ceiling fan in the living room. The last month or so, I’ve been working on a Z-Box QuickApp to talk with the Bond Bridge (I have the BD-1000). Unlike the (ahem!) crude QuickApps I’ve seen for it–which require an instance of the app for each target device–this one is a single QuickApp for all devices. It can control individual blinds and also supports the new Scene capability of the Bond–which lets you easily set up actions on devices other than window shades, as well as group shade actions, e.g., “Close All Shades,” “Open Kitchen Shades,” and so on.
If all continues to go well with the testing, I’ll release the QuickApp here for anyone who might be interested.
